SAMMS Products

Thiol-SAMMS® is the best product available for mercury removal in a liquid. It has the highest capacity of any adsorbent on the market. This combined with the fastest kinetics allow customers to reach the lowest levels of mercury concentrations. Case studies have proven the ability to reach levels below 1 ppt. It operates over a wide range of pH levels. Its hydrophobic characteristics enhance the ability to remove mercury in the presence of organics. The mercury is chemically bonded to SAMMS which results in the waste product passing TCLP requirements. This and the high capacity result in lower disposal cost. If desired, the mercury can be stripped from the SAMMS and both can be reused.

Magnetic Thiol-SAMMS® (THFL) is an adsorbent specifically designed to capture and remove mercury from waste streams with suspended solids. The fast kinetics, high loading capacity and strong covalent bonding place SAMMS as one of the best technologies to remove mercury. The magnetic moment of THFL allows the adsorbent to be separated and removed from the waste stream after remediation using commercially available magnetic separation technology.

Magnetic Thiol-SAMMS ® (THFG) is a molecular engineered adsorbent specifically designed to capture and remove mercury from gaseous waste streams. The unique chemistry of the THFG makes it a highly effective gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) adsorbent. It can be used in a filter or injected into a waste stream such as flue gas and recaptured magnetically. Independent tests performed at Western Kentucky University demonstrate the adsorption characteristics equal or exceed activated carbon, while allowing the material to be cycled over and over.

Thiol-SAMMS® products show tremendous potential for removing a wide range of precious metal catalysts including platinum and palladium. SAMMS adsorbents should enable pharmaceutical companies to achieve cleaner processes and lower their total cost of production. SAMMS will also allow these customers to meet strict regulatory limits on metal contamination. The ability to potentially recover the catalysts from the SAMMS adsorbent will further reduce the overall cost of production. SAMMS can be utilized in a very broad range of pH and in a variety of solvents so it may be used directly within existing reaction streams without any modification. SAMMS can be provided incorporated in filters for easy insertion into an existing filtration step or in a ferromagnetic form which would allow for removal by magnetic separation techniques.

Steward offers a SAMMS® loaded cartridge filter for the removal of mercury. These filters work very well when the initial mercury concentration is high (ppm) and the desired output is less than 1 ppb. They may used individually or in series. There are several sizes available – OD’s and length.

Thiol-SAMMS is highly selective for “soft” heavy metals. In addition to mercury, it can adsorb silver, gold, platinum, palladium, lead, copper, cadmium, arsenite, antimony and iodine.
